Foil stamping – Finishing By Legacy is Foil Stamping. Foil Stamping or hot stamping is a printing method of relief printing in which pre-dried ink or foils are transferred to a surface at high temperatures. The non-polluting method has diversified since its rise to prominence in the 19th century to include a variety of colors and processes. It is done by the placement of a sheet of foil over the surface of a product covering the desired decoration area. The die is heated as is the die with the etched design or logo. Using a foiling machine, the stamp is pressed onto the foil. Foil stamping adds flair and elegance to any print project resulting in an eye-catching finishing touch to any design. Foil sheets come in a variety of colors and styles. Foil Stamping is perfect for invitations, business cards, pocket folders, letterhead and any other printed material that call for formality, design and elegance.
Based on your substrate and the type of finish you want, you can choose from one of the four (hot) foil stamping techniques discussed below:
- Flat foil stamping, a simple, economical process where a copper or magnesium metal stamp is used to transfer the foil onto the substrate. It achieves a foil design that is relatively raised from the surface.
- Vertical foil stamping, which is used to stamp foil designs on flat substrates and cylindrical shaped areas.
- Sculpted foil stamping, which uses brass dies to achieve a raised image for a clearly defined and carved look.
- Peripheral foil stamping, where foil heat transfers are applied to the outer perimeter – across the entire circumference – of the product.
Typically gold and silver coloring is used to create a luxurious effect. Various finishes, such as glossy, matte, metallic, holographic sparkles and wood grains are available.

Foil printing goes back thousands of years. In a time before Gutenberg’s press, the process was done completely by hand. It took a skilled artist, molten gold and lots of time to create the gold-leafed books of days gone by. After sizing a book up, gold leaves were hand laid onto the selected area. The book cover was then placed in a hot-stamping press which was powered by gas. As the availability and demand for books grew, so too did the demand for foil stamping. Genuine gold leaf was a costly material. Bookbinder Ernest Oeser is credited with having pioneered the foil press. That is, a metallic material that can leave a print on a surface with the application of heat, rather than using genuine gold. After the 1950s, the technology moved quickly to what we know foil printing to be today.
